An art exhibit of Coney Island images by Save Coney Island volunteer Eric March opens this weekend at Park Slope Gallery. The show will feature oil paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings of Coney Island (as well as Long Island City) and celebrates the small businesses, handcrafted signs, free-wheeling crowds, and creative spirit that defines Coney Island. Grassroots activist group Save Coney Island today blasted developer Thor Equities over its closure Friday of the so-called “Dreamland” amusement park, with the developer citing a rent dispute with its own hand-picked amusement operator. “Dreamland” was Thor’s supposed attempt to fill the void it created in Coney Island when it cruelly forced out Astroland, which was Coney Island’s anchor amusement park for almost half a century until Thor refused to renew its lease last year. The City Council may have approved a flawed rezoning plan that threatens to permanently diminish Coney Island’s famed amusement district, but Save Coney Island is not giving up the fight.
On August 5 Save Coney Island held its first meeting since the City Council’s vote. It was a great meeting, attended by several dozen enthusiastic New Yorkers —Coney Island residents, local business owners, artists, performers, Polar Bears, and Coney Island-lovers of all sorts. In response to today’s City Council vote to approve the Bloomberg administration’s flawed rezoning plan for Coney Island, grassroots activist group Save Coney Island issued the following statement from its spokesman, Juan Rivero:
This is a sad day for New York City. As a result of this rezoning, people across the city and around the world who love Coney Island could see its historic amusement district shrunk, covered up and blocked off with high-rises, its history destroyed and its potential squandered — all for nothing. Yesterday, New York City Councilman Tony Avella blasted the City’s Coney Island rezoning plan on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show.”

Earlier this month, Councilman Avella worked with Save Coney Island to introduce an amendment in the City Council’s zoning committee recommending that the city fix its plan by expanding the area for amusements and removing the proposed high-rise hotels.
Unfortunately, the committee rejected the proposal, despite the fact that it was based upon the recommendations of the respected Municipal Art Society, which were endorsed by The New York Times.
Join us for one last rally to save Coney Island before the City Council votes on a flawed rezoning plan that would forever ruin Coney Island’s famed amusement district.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz issued a statement expressing hope that the final plan for Coney Island will be reflect the recommendations made by him and others, “including a larger amusement area that remains unique, creative and iconic in its architecture, signage, lighting and preservation of appropriate buildings and amusements.”
